WHO WOULD WE LIKE TO BE WHEN PEOPLE IN NEED IS AT OUR DOORSTEP?
In fall 2013 about 360 refugees, mostly women and kids, drowned when the boat they were at capsized few sea miles from the Italian island Lampedusa. How should we handle this stream of people who are fleeing from their home countries? In this play the fisherman from Lampedusa Stefano. Actually, he was a fisherman. Since the fishery is in a crisis he now provides for himself by sailing out picking up the bodies from the sea when another boat from overloaded boat with African refugees capsizes on its way to the promised land. We also meet Denise who is a young woman from Leeds in England. She studies at the university and to make it financially she has taken a job as a debt collector in a private firm that offers payday loans. Therefore, she is the one who knocks on people’s doors when they cannot repay their loans.
So why these two characters? Lustgarten, clearly, focuses on refugees and the refugee/migration-theme, but he also points his focus onto us. Us here in the west. Who are we? Who are we when meeting both ourselves and the strangers? And who do we want to be? Which Europe do we want to be when people in need are at our doorstep?
LAMPEDUSA portrays Europe’s challenge with migration and refugees through two personal stories told by two people who, as many others, feel challenged by immigration and the strangers. Experience a story about the most powerful and present events right now, free of political proclamations and admonishing words.
